PROPOSAL OF THE PROJECT

The aim of this symposium is to continue the breakthroughinto living culture, which began at the 2013 symposium and was dedicated to celebrating the 200th anniversary of S. Kierkegaard's birth and the topic of an existential turn. It is a part of the publishing house KUD Apokalipsa's three-year-program of literary events, under the name Kierkegaard's year. This was in 2014 followed by an international conference and a workshop in Ljubljana and in the Karst region in Slovenia. It inspired local and global shifts in thinking about issues at the core of ethics. Symposiums (2013, 2015) as well as conferences (2013-2015) are part of a comprehensive three-year program which in the first year took the form of the »event«, the following year of »doubling« and the third year of »repetition«. The highlight of this program is a conference in the Cankarjev dom convention centre – in 2015 for three days, as it was in 2013.

Thinking about Kierkegaard opened new philosophical aspects and contemplation of their particular ethics. A new institute as a non-governmental organization was established: A Central European Research Institute of Søren Kierkegaard in Ljubljana. And if in the first year this lecture was held under the title
New oikonomy of relationships: neighbour and existential turn and in the second year under the title How to avoid the totalitarianism of consumerism, the third year will present the culmination – a symposium and conference in Cankarjev dom Cultural and Congress Centre will complete and deepen the three-year event with a contemplation on the title Repetition as event: How to put an existential turn into practice? The participants of the symposium will be outstanding philosophers, intellectuals and theologians from Central and Eastern Europe, as well as the most prominent researchers around the world. After all, in 2013, Slovenia proved to be a perfect meeting point at the crossroads of European experiences.

FOUNDATION OF THE PROJECT

The philosophy symposium in honor of the 200th aniversary of S. Kierkegaard's birth in 2013, which took place in Slovenia, was the largest symposium of this type in the world and is still talked about. It was held under the auspicies of the UNESCO organization, which recognized it as a »symbol of the great philosophical tradition, and Slovenia's leading role in the field of the European intellectual scene.« (Irina Bokova, Director-General of UNESCO). Proof of the symposium's success came in the form of a special award Dr. Primož Repar received (on March 3, 2014) for his organization and coordination of the symposium in 2013 in Central Europe.

Slovenia took the cultural and humanistic initiative in Central Europe where Kierkegaardian thought is very much alive today. A recently founded Kierkegaard Institute in Ljubljana is becoming the core of not only central European, but also global intellectual reflection on the most important questions of the modern age.

The symposium is organized by publisher Apokalipsa in cooperation with CERI.SK Institute in Ljubljana. The project is run by Primož Repar, an independent researcher, who runs the publishing house and is also the director of a newly founded institute.

Apokalipsa has also been organizing the attention-grabbing and unique project Review within Review for a decade now. Since 2007, the project also includes a biennial International Philosophical Symposium of Miklavž Ocepek, based on an existential line of thought and promotes subjects referring to the actual and always relevant present situation. This time it focuses not only on commemorating S. Kierkegaard, but also M. Ocepek, P. Ricoeur and E. Levinas.

Symposium 2015 wants to go a step further and advance the thoughts which link reflective individuals from philosophers to theologians, interdisciplinary researchers, intellectuals and artists, not only between Central and southeast Europe, but also around the world - globally.

In a jubilee year of four thinkers we will upgrade the symposium with a philosophy conference of three days in Cankarjev dom Cultural and Congress Centre, where the leading Slovenian and foreign thinkers (eagerly awaited Danish visitors included) will present their thoughts on the topic. We are also preparing a rich accompanying program.

The conference will, as in previous years, take place in the central cultural institution in the center of the Slovene capital (Cankarjev dom Cultural and Congress Centre) and in co-production with it. The Slavic part of the symposium will be organized in cooperation with CERI (Central European Research Institute of Søren Kierkegaard, Ljubljana – Nitra - Prague), the University of Ljubljana (the Faculty of Theology and the Faculty of Arts) and Universities of Prague, Nitra and Toronto.

On the occasion of this event the publisher Apokalipsa and the CERI.SK Institute in Ljubljana will issue various journals, anthologies and monographs on the topic of the symposium, which will bring public attention to the project. The symposium itself will be accompanied by movie projections, plays and various literary, music, photography, and art events. The texts created will also be published during the following year as a part of books in different languages of Central Europe and in English.

What’s new about this year’s symposium are various workshops on such topics as: comics, science, translation, enthusiastic citizenship, existential practice, Central European cooperation, theatre. These workshops will be held between June 15th and 18th in Slovenia’s Karst region and presumably also in Trieste, during late-afternoon hours. Workshops are organized and managed by the
Central European Research Institute of Søren Kierkegaard in Ljubljana, some in cooperation with other civil society organizations, for example, the Misel v praksi Institute (The thought in practice Institute).

SHORT PRESENTATION OF THE PROJECT

The 4th International Symposium of Miklavž Ocepek will take place between June 11th and 18th 2015 with accompanying events during the whole year. The working part of the symposium will be comprised of two parts, the symposium that will take place in the form of three-day conference in Cankarjev dom and philosophical workshops, lectures, debates, roundtables, presentations of participants and their work and the social gatherings and cultural events in the village of Škocjan near Trieste (under the protection of the UNESCO convention).

The symposium will open in Ljubljana and continue in the Slovene capital with the final roundtable on the theme of the entire event:
REPETITION AS EVENT: HOW TO PUT AN EXISTENTIAL TURN INTO PRACTICE? Subjectivity in the light of (un)existing reality between the internal and the external. The first three days after the opening will take place in the form of a colloquium in which many researchers of Kierkegaardian thought, philosophers, writers and thinkers interested in the topic will take part. In the context of the event we also intend to present a play »presenting Miklavž Ocepek thought and memory«.

CRITERION OF SUCCESS

The success of the project is guaranteed by the organizing board under the guidance of Dr. Primož Repar and Publisher Apokalipsa, that has given special attention to Kierkegaard in the magazine Apokalipsa (monthly journal for living culture) as well as in its philosophical collection AUT since their inception in 1993. In the AUT collection, in 1997 Dr. Primož Repar edited a journal “Živeči Kierkegaard” (“Living Kierkegaard”), followed by several translations by Repar of Kierkegaard’s work (“Pojem tesnobe” (“The Concept of Anxiety”), 1998; “Dnevnik zapeljivca” (“The Diary of Seducer”, 1998; “Ali-ali (“Either/Or”, 2003; “Strah in trepet” (“Fear and Trambling”, 2005; “Etično-religiozni razpravici” (“Two ethical-religious essays”, 2009; “Z vidika mojega pisateljstva” (“The Point of View, 2012”). Special attention should go to Apokalipsa’s international incentive Review within Review, that has to this date transmitted 80 different editions in 13 languages to different European cultures and comprises a unique festival of publishers and authors, organizes book fairs and, finally, since 2007, also an international philosophical symposium, this time dedicated to the challenge of four important thinkers (Kierkegaard, Ocepek, Ricoeur, Levinas). This symposium links Central and southeast Europe with the rest of the world, its co-producer is the most prestigious cultural institution in Slovenia, Cankarjev dom, and it cooperates with professional associations at home and abroad.

The symposium will be organized in collaboration with CERI (Central European Research Institute, Ljubljana – Nitra - Prague),
Kierkegaard Circle, Trinity College, University of Toronto (Canada) and Faculty of Theology and Faculty of Arts of the University of Ljubljana (their representatives will help organize the project).

Preparations for the symposium also include organizing events of wide public interest and planning publications of books and magazines in Slovene, English, a few other Central European languages and Esperanto (Miklavž Ocepek).

Appropriate attention will be dedicated to communication with the media. In fact, it will be the center of our attention throughout the entire program under the name “Kierkegaard’s year”. We will prepare several press conferences, namely on the occasion of every new edition of a book or magazine dedicated to Kierkegaard. Before the symposium begins the media will be informed about the participants, and we will conduct multiple interviews offering them to various media houses, radio and television. In the Apokalipsa magazine we will be giving specific attention to the symposium. We will follow events on the website of the CERI.SK Institute (currently in the making) and on social networks. Foreign social networks and webpages will be included, especially the international CERI.SK webpage and CERI.SK Facebook page. We will offer media sponsorship with the possibility of full coverage of the events to Slovene dailies, cultural weekly newspapers and other important media.

SYMPOSIUM AND WORKSHOPS AT THE KARST REGION between 15th and 18th of June

Breakfast with philosophy:

I cannot not be responsible.

DISCOURSE AND WITNESSING by Miklavž Ocepek

Philosophical workshops:

Loneliness in this abandoned world is no longer merely an emotional state; it has become an existential category worthy of philosophical treatment in all its phenomenological dimensions… Can we find encouragement for this in some new way of thinking about ethics? Is the fascination of the other really so disarming that it can lead us out of the abandoned world? But is not otherness already foreignness?

THE ABANDONED WORLD by Miklavž Ocepek

Philosophical lectures:

Luckily for everyone time ran out also on this totalitarian system, as it did on many preceding and latter-day ones. But the “story” of the horrors people lived through under such regimes is never finished. The people who experienced such horrors have been forever marked by what they were forced to endure. Again and again they would re-live this time, unwillingly and in anguish. Many survived to tell future generations about the horrors of that time and caution them. I hope that our time is still able to lend its ear to these warnings and pass them on.

TOTALITARIANISM AND TIME by Miklavž Ocepek

Philosophical-artistic evenings:

Death brings us the experience of the Other and alterity. It first happens within us, then also in relation to others whom, enveloped as we are in mystery, can no longer consider being similar to us. The other is not an other-self, but a different Other. Every analogy fails here. The other is precisely what I am not.
